Essential information about clear aligner therapy including Invisalign

What does Porth offer?

Porth Aligner Sammamish

Dr. Rooz Khosravi provides orthodontic treatment with the Invisalign appliance and Porth Clear Aligners (in-house aligners). He is a clear aligner therapy expert and has deep understanding of how to move teeth using aligners.

Dr. Rooz has been extensively studying the Invisalign appliance. His recent study of 120 patients was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, which holds the highest rank among publications in the orthodontic field.

Dr. Rooz also lectures on the technology required for clear aligner therapy. He designed the Porth Clear Aligner system to provide a customized aligner experience directly to his patients.

What is Clear Aligner Therapy?

Clear Aligner Therapy (CAT) is a method that orthodontists or dentists use to move your teeth into correct alignment with a series of computer-designed clear plastic aligners. They are clear plastic shells that fit closely over the teeth, apply pressure on the teeth and slowly but steadily move them.

The practice of moving teeth with plastic has existed for over 50 years. In 1971, Dr. Robert Ponitz demonstrated for the first time that teeth can be moved by an invisible retainer. Then, Zia Chasti and Kelsey Wirth used this concept and invented the Invisalign system – a computer-assisted approach that slowly moves teeth with a series of aligner trays. Each tray is specifically designed to move teeth closer to the desired final position and give you that perfectly aligned smile.

Why would you choose Clear Aligner Therapy?

There are four major reasons to choose a clear aligner:

1. You are mainly driven by esthetics and are not interested in clear braces

2. You like to remove the appliance while eating

3. You prefer an easier approach to clean your teeth

4. You are interested to temporarily removing appliances for special events. For example a presentation at school, a job interview, an important meeting or a date.

The major challenge with clear aligners, including Invisalign, is wearing the aligner for 18-22 hours a day. This rule applies to any removable appliance that aims to move teeth.

Primary reasons for unsuccessful aligner therapy are losing the aligners or forgetting to wear them frequently. Your teeth move back to their initial position when you are not wearing your aligner because the force created by the aligner is eliminated.

How does Invisalign or clear aligners work?

Porth Sammamish Aligners

Clear aligners are built based on a digital simulation of teeth in their ideal positions. In order to fabricate the aligners, a digital scan, or an impression, of your teeth imported into software that allows an orthodontist or dentist to digitally move your teeth to their ideal positions. The software then generates several dental models in which your teeth have been gradually moved to their ideal position. A commercial or an in-house lab will 3D print these models and manufactures the aligners by a thermo vacuum forming process.

What are the different types of clear aligners?

Several types of clear aligners are available in the market. The Invisalign appliance has been around the longest. It is a well-developed appliance used by orthodontists and dentists to correct mild to severe malocclusions. The most essential factors in a successful treatment with Invisalign are compliance of the patient as well as the knowledge of the provider on how to use the appliance.

The existing alternative clear aligner systems are Clear Correct and MTM® Clear•Aligner, and this list is growing. These appliances are good choices for a moderate to mild malocclusion.

Who can provide Clear Aligner Therapy?

Orthodontists and general dentists both provide clear aligner therapy.

Orthodontists have received an extra two to three years of comprehensive training following dental school, so that they are specialized in moving teeth.
